Adaptation is when an animal or plant changes to suit its environment or changes to survive. Li adapts to the situation when "After many experiments she discovered a technique of the point down with one hand and twisting the shell to and fro beneath it." (170) Li uses this newfound skill to make a gift for Rawi after she has a baby because it is apart of their culture to give gifts to the new mothers.
