Muwatallis was a king of the Hittites' New Kingdom. He was the king that led his forces against the Egyptians at the Battle of Kadesh in 1275 BC, opposing the Egyptians' attempt to regain their control over Syria. Muwatallis defeated the Egyptians in this battle, resulting in the extension of Hittite control as far as Damascus. This Hittite victory marked the beginning of Hittite dominance in the region. Because of Muwatallis' victory, he was later declared a "great" king in the peace treaty signed by the two empires following the end of the Battle of Kadesh. Muwatallis was Hattusilis' III brother.
