Return to History 8 Near East Vocabulary

Sidon, along with Tyre, were some of the most powerful city states in ancient Phoenicia. Sidon was inhabited as early as 4000 B.C. Sidon became one of the more rich and famous city states in ancient Phoenicia because of the production of glass. Sidon was considered the seat of the Phoenician religion because many of the ships that left the port would spread the Phoenician culture to other areas. Sidon was the first city state to produce a purple dye that soon became the color of royalty due to its rarity and expense. Sidon also grew in wealth through maritime trade.
