Artifacts can convey information beyond their function. Artifacts that are strictly useful are labeled technic or technomic. Artifacts which show a social class (materials or decoration set them apart from the ordinary) are labeled socio-technic. Artifacts that show a relationship are labeled ideotechnic. Some examples include a crown or scepter and a cross or a star of David. Any place where human activity occurred and where artifacts are found is called an archaeological site. The two types of archaeological sites are prehistoric and historic. Prehistoric sites are those which occurred before the culture began writing records. Historic sites are sometimes easier for the archaeologists to interpret because documents and drawings are available, aiding archaeologist's understanding of the site.
