Return to History 8 Human Origins Concepts H. Sapiens, a thin-boned bipedal with a large cranial capacity, is the only species of hominid currently inhabiting. Two sources argue that our survival is attributed to the ability to mentally modify their environment, think in depth, and imagine like no other creature could. For example, other species became extinct due to harsh change in climate and overall inability to adapt; whereas, H. Sapiens utilized their intellectual capacity to survive by migrating, trying new foods, and creating new technology, which enabled them to live more efficiently. Neanderthals became extinct due to the competition of the more fit species, H. Sapiens. This initially small, isolated, African species has spread throughout the globe and formed an immense population that includes all of "us".
