Return to *History 8 Mesopotamia Vocabulary

Mesopotamia was the name of the region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Translated from Greek, Mesopotamia means "between the rivers." Mesopotamia was home to many cultures and settlements, such as the Akkad and Sumer. Northern Mesopotamia was comprised of hills and plains. The northern land was very fertile because of the seasonal rains and rivers. Southern Mesopotamia is marshy, and also has some barren plains. Many cities developed near rivers in southern Mesopotamia. Irrigation was necessary to farm there. [1](picture link)
