Without rationalism, there would be chaos. It is the view that regards reason as the most important source and test of knowledge. Or a theory "in which the criterion of the truth is not sensory but intellectual and deductive". René Descartes is known as the father of 17th century rationalism.

RB It is the combination of geometry and argument combined to go from something you do know to something that is not evident.
