Early history of the kingdom can be found in the "Early" section, the history in between Early and Late is in the "Middle" section, and information about the end of the kingdom is in the "Late" section. Early

The Kingdom of Israel occupied land in the same area where modern-day Israel lies. The first king of Israel was Saul from the tribe of Benjamin, who consolidated the tribes. According to the Bible, the next king was David. He defeated the Philistines using his slingshot, an event which is the basis for the story of David and the Goliath. Additionally, his powerful army enabled him to expand the empire. He conquered the town of Jerusalem and made it the civil and religious capitol of the Kingdom of Israel. Solomon, the son of David, ruled the kingdom after his father.

Middle

When Solomon died (circa 920 BCE), the kingdom split into two parts. Israel was in the northern part of the region with its capital of Samaria and the Kingdom of Judah was in the south. The Kingdom of Judah's capital was Jerusalem.

Between 900 and 750 BCE, biblical states like Israel and Judah developed governments that allowed for the construction of many large-scale projects such as the development of measurement standards and water tunnels.

Late

The Kingdom of Israel fell when the Assyrians captured its capital in 722 BCE. The Kingdom of Judah's people were deported and its cities were destroyed by the Assyrians following a revolt led by Hezekiah, the then-king of Judah.
