Also called the Scorpion King, Narmer-Menes is was from southern Egypt. His name has been a topic of discussion for many years because, on the Narmer Palette, his name and a picture of him are found. His name is written is hieroglyphs. However, on the "Scorpion" Macehead, another artifact, there is a similar picture of him, but this time, the name is depicted by a pictogram of a Scorpion. He was believed to be the first god of Egypt who united Upper and Lower Egypt through conquering the North between 3150 and 3110 BC. Menes built his capital city in Memphis. He was considered a god because that guaranteed stable cosmos. His reign was in the Predynastic Period, and many of the Egyptian rites and customs (centralized power, royal rituals, and cult of the dead) formed during this time. Also, many of the "mainstays of later Egypt: efficient farming, metal-working, centrally organized irrigation pottery, stone-working, ceremonial and monumental architecture, elaborate burials, and long-distance trade were all established" (Manual 117).
