The "Homo ergaster" were the first of our ancestors to look like modern humans. The word "homo" is Latin for "human" or "man." The word "ergaster" is based on a greek word meaning "work." So, Homo ergaster means "working man" because large stone tools were found near their fossils. Homo ergaster were the first animals to stand fully erect so they had the ability to work and make tools. The Homo ergaster made tools by hitting stones to make sharp edges. Home ergaster evolved into a fully hominid creature 1.9 million years ago (mya), so they first started to evolve around 2 million years ago.
