Back to *History 8 Mesopotamia Vocabulary Apsu comes from the word abyss and was thought to be the dwelling place of the god of waters and wisdom, Enki. The Apsu was the place that the political society first came to Earth. The Apsu was at the edge of a great sea of fresh water stretching out to the South and was also the place where the first gods were born, the twin deities. The myth says that at the beginning there was nothing but the apsu the waters underground, and Tiamat, the sea, mingling their waters together. In these waters the first gods came into being, and generation followed generation. The gods represented energy and activity and therefore differed markedly from Apsu and Tiamat, who stood for rest and inertia.
