In the Late Bronze Age, Canaan joined the international community. Egypt ruled Canaan for more than 300 years. The “mayors” of Canaan were controlled the Pharaoh of Egypt. They traded over the ocean with Minoan Crete, Mycenaean Greece, and Cyprus. Egyptian power was established by Pharaoh Thutmoses III. Thutmoses was able to conquer a force of Canaanite city states during the Battle of Megiddo. Canaan city rulers, council of elders, and best warriors were chosen from high class families that owned land or were merchants. These rulers relied on the power of the Egyptians. Often the princes of powerful families were taken to Egypt to be trained to be faithful to the Pharaoh. Egypt used Canaan as a safety system from more powerful enemy is the North. They also used them as a source of supplies and money. The Egyptians brought in new cultures to the Canaans like architecture, music, and literature.
