Ashoka was the son of Chandraguta II. He expanded his grandfather's empire to include much of India. His thirty-five year reign is remembered as one of the most significant in history. After a bloody war where Ashoka's army is victorious against the kingdom of Kalinga. He says he killed a hundred thousand people, deported one hundred thousand people, and left one hundred thousand more homeless. After this war Ashoka became convinced that war was wrong and became a strong believer in non-violence. He said "I will try to conquer by right conduct alone". He believed that everything in nature should be treated with respect and he strived to spread his idea of ecological and conservation measures.
