Plate Tectonics and Rocks

Plate Tectonics Near Cordoba

Cordoba is located on the South American Plate, about one quarter of the way across from the eastern border of the plate. Because of Cordoba's proximity to the subduction at the Nazca-South American plate boundary, the city is affected by the landforms that result. The eastern edge of the city is bordered by the Sierras Cordobas (avg. height: 550m) which are formed by the border.

Rocks

Cordoba's rock population is predominately sedimentary rocks formed in the Quaternary Period, but the Sierras Cordobas are mostly precambrian Igneous and Metamorphic rocks.
