Rocks that Underlay Phoenix
There are many rocks found in the Grand Canyon near Phoenix Arizona. The Grand Canyon has 9 layers of rocks The first layer is made up of Kaibab limestone that formed about 250 million years ago. The color is greyish-white and there are some fossils found in this layer. The second layer is the Toroweap formation which is mainy composed of the same rocks in the Kaibab limestone except it was formed around 255 million years ago. The third layer is the Coconino Sandstone which is about 260 million years old and contains pure quartz sand. The forth layer of the Grand Canyon is Hermit Shale which is soft and formed at a slope. This layer is easily eroded and dates to about 265 million years ago. There are many other layers such as the supai formation, redwall limestone, muav limestone, bright angel shale, and Tapeats sandstone.
