Tianjin is a city in China and the direct translation of the name means "ferry" in Chinese. [1] It is the sixth largest Chinese city in terms of urban population and it is the fifth in urban land area. [2]

Geography

Tianjin is located in Northern China in the Tianjin province [3] close to Beijing with coordinates of approximately Latitude = 39.1209, Longitude = 117.2150 Lat = 39 degrees, 7.3 minutes North Long = 117 degrees, 12.9 minutes East. [4] Tianjin is mainly swampy with few hills near the coast but in the north the Yanshan Mountains pass through Tianjin, making it hilly. It is located along the coast of the Bohai Gulf and is at the Northern end of the Grand Canal of China. The highest elevation, Jiushanding Peak, is 1078 meters high. The rest of Tianjin is mostly flat.

The elevation of Tianjin makes it cooler in the mountainous region but warmer in the plains regions. The latitude of Tianjin is close to the equator so it is fairly warm. It is close to a large water body so it does not have extreme winters or summers. Tianjin is also close to the Kuroshio ocean current, a warm current, so it is generally warm.

Geology

Tianjin lies on the Eurasian plate and is approximately 1,000 miles from the Philippine Sea boundary line, which subducts under the Philippine Mobile Belt at the Philippine Trench and the East Luzon Trench on its western side. [8] Tianjin lies mostly on basalt and felsic rocks such as granite, as does most of the rest of China, because of its closeness to the Yanshan Mountains. [9]
