Cydia is a package manager app that appears on iphones following a jailbreak.

Overview

The application was developed by Jay Freeman and he called it Cydia as an allusion to the Cydia Genus Of Moths, which is like "a worm in the apple" (The apple being the apple iphone).[1] The application enables a user to find and install software packages on jailbroken iPhones, iPads and iPods. Cydia provides a graphical user interface to jailbroken users using Advanced Packaging Tool repositories to install software that is not available on the App Store. As of April 2011, Cydia had a $10 million in annual revenue and 4.5 million weekly users and according to Freeman $250,000 net annual profit.

Significance

With the Cydia Application, iphone users are apple to modify their phones beyond the limits of Apple. This freedom to the user standard is extremely important in a world that demands freedom of choice. Applications on Cydia can preform operations as simple as changing the color of the time on the home page, to the advanced operation of downloading an unlimited amount of paid applications off the Appstore for free (illegally). Having Cydia on your phone through jailbreaking is completely legal as customizing your phone past apple's limits is legal, and because Cydia is available in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Greek, German, Hebrew, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Arabic, Vietnamese, Russian and more, numerous people around the world have a newfound sense of freedom as they break boundaries with their iphones.
