A motherboard is the main circuit board in the electronic device by the name of computer. It was invented in order to connect many important devices in the computer to help it function.

Overview

The motherboard was basically invented at the time of the invention of the microprocessor, and it became important to connect the processor with the CPU, and monitor. It gained popularity during late 1980s, when more different devices were made for the computer, and thus the motherboard became significantly important. The motherboard's function is to hold different important components of a computer, such as the CPU, RAM, and BIOS, and enables these components to interact with each other, in order to have the computer functioning. The motherboard is also able to connect external devices, like USB drives and headphones to connect with the computer. The motherboard was invented in 1981 by IBM although at the time it was actually called a "breadboard" and not a motherboard. [1] The actual technology on a motherboard has evolved greatly with now it having integrated graphics, audio processing, and network connectivity. [2]

Significance

The motherboard is used in all computer devices today and will probably be used for a very long time. The concept of the motherboard is used in many electronic devices, though then it is called the circuit board, which functions in the same way as the motherboard.
