Nintendo is a company from Japan that makes games, cards, and gaming consoles. While they did not start out making video games, most of their projects now are in the field of video games. Nintendo was founded by Fusajiro Yamauchi in 1889; however, it was not until the 1970s that that Nintendo became the video game company that it is known as today.

Overview

Nintendo is an entertainment company based in Japan. It first ventured into the field of electronic entertainment in 1974, when it introduced the Magnavox Odyssey. It's popularity increased dramatically in 1981 with the introduction of Donkey Kong. Two years later, Nintendo introduced their own home console: the Famicom, or Nintendo Entertainment System. In 1985 the NES was launched in America, along with the game Super Mario Bros. In 1989, Nintendo released the Game Boy, which is the best selling console of all time. Then, they created the SNES, or Super Nintendo Entertainment System, which surpassed the SEGA Genesis in sales. After that, they made lots of other products which were also very popular which include the Nintendo 64 and the Wii. Nintendo also revealed the Wii U on November 18, 2012, which was a step up from the Wii. The Wii U had a game pad, which has a small screen on it. This way, the Wii U had two screens. Games utilized this by displaying info on the smaller screen, while the main game was on the screen that the Wii U was connected to. The game pad has similar controls to an Xbox or Playstation controller. On March 3rd 2017, Nintendo released another gaming console known as the Nintendo Switch to compete with Sony's Playstation 4, and Microsoft's Xbox1. It sold for $300 (US) and had an internal flash memory of 32GB.

Significance

Nintendo is very important to the history of computers because it created games and systems that revolutionized entertainment and the way we look at technology. The company has made significant advances and was one of the first companies to use motion control for a gaming console with the Wii. It brought joy to millions of children around the world and debt to their parents's bank accounts.
