Introduction

The AMD Athlon Processor was the first seventh-generation x86 processor and was the first desktop processor to reach speeds of one gigahertz. AMD constructed this processor with the 64-bit architecture. This processor was the first of it's kind, allowing for higher speeds for all functions of a computer.

Overview

It was released in June of 1999. After the release of the AMD’s K6 line of processors, they proceeded to come pump out their next generation: the K7s. AMD designed them with more decoding capabilities, and then carry out optimal instructions. The Athlon also launched at 500 MHz, making it one of the fastest processors at the time.
