Introduction

The Xbox is a revolutionary gaming device developed by workers at Microsoft that was released in 2001.

Overview

In 1998, four designers at Microsoft pitched the idea for a gaming console built like a PC to Bill Gates, who then decided that it was a good idea. The Xbox was to run on Windows 2000 so that PC game developers could create games for it easier and it also had twice the processing power than the popular Playstation 2 from Sony. The Xbox was officially released in 2001 and sold over 1 million copies within the first few weeks. The next year, Microsoft released Xbox Live, which allowed Xbox players to chat and play online games with other people around the world. [1] original_xbox_1.jpg

Microsoft released the Xbox One in 2014. Xbox One was marketed as the "ultimate all-in-one entertainment system" with features such as streaming directly to Twitch, play Blue-ray DVDs, and can play live television.[2]

Microsoft released the Xbox One S at the E3 conference on June 13th, 2016. This new Xbox was a revision of the old model, but was 40% smaller and supported vertical orientation with an included stand.[4] In addition, Microsoft released the Xbox One X on November 7, 2017. The console was launched at the price of $499 and is currently the most powerful console on the market.[5]

Significance

While the Xbox was not the first console to allow players to play online, it was the first to heavily popularize it. Around 150,000 people signed up for Xbox Live within the first week, and more were to come when Microsoft would release Xbox Live along with the Xbox 360. In addition, the original Xbox allowed for many people to have a powerful gaming device in their own home without having to buy or create a more expensive PC. It also would lead to the development of modern gaming consoles like the Xbox One and revolutionized online gameplay.
