During the late 1990's, Yahoo! was the leading domain in internet portals and one of the first search engines turned multi-media corporations. Yahoo! was the predecessor to Google, and in many ways inspired Google's development into the massive company that it has become.

Initially called "Jerry's guide to the world wide web," the domain "yahoo.com" was officially created on January 18, 1995 by Jerry Yang and David Filo, two Stanford University graduate students. [1] [2] The web portal site quickly dominated the internet, its stock skyrocketing on the Nasdaq exchange. Yahoo!'s glory however, would be short lived, as its lack of executed acquisitions would prove to be fatal. In 1998, Yahoo! declined the offer to buy PageRank (Google's search engine), [3] and in 2002, Yahoo! hesitated when given the opportunity to acquire the already well-established Google, and ended up bailing on the deal when the price was raised, a decision that would ultimately cause Yahoo!'s fall from the internet throne. [4] The immense success Google had within the internet scene undoubtedly marked the beginning of Yahoo!'s struggle to compete, and ultimate downfall. With a smarter, more relevant search engine, Google began to dominate over Yahoo!, who failed to keep up without spreading themselves thin across too many forms of media,[5] including email, chat forums, and news. [6] Yahoo! also failed to close a deal with Facebook, a purchase that could've saved themselves from downfall. In addition to these failed acquisitions, the deals they did manage to secure were not very successful [7] These misfortunes in combination with a string of ineffective CEO's caused Yahoo! to decline to a point of no return. [8] As of 2016, Verizon has acquired Yahoo! for $4.8 billion. [9]


Significance

During the late 1990's, Yahoo was the most popular starting point for web users and also one of the first multi-media sites, hoping to be a one-stop shop for users to have access to anything they might need. [10] While Yahoo! may only have been successful for a short while, their leading hand in online media integration inspired companies like Google to do the same, developing and expanding the web far beyond what it had achieved at the time.
