Hard Drive

A hard drive is one of the most important parts of a computer. All permanent memory is stored on the hard drive using encoded data. Storage space varies and is measured in units called gigabytes, or billions of bytes. A rotating disk rubs against a read and write head that imprints encoded information on the rotating drive. Most information that the computer needs to remember between uses is stored on the hard-drive, where the magnetic data can be stored without a stream of electricity. When the data is needed for use when the computer is on, it is moved to RAM, where it can be closer to the central processing unit, but needs constant electricity to remain viable.
