Minoans

The Minoans are one of the ancient peoples of Crete. They did not have great conquests but there are many legends and stories told about them. There is also a legend about how they fell which was disproved. But as the Myceneans, they had a polytheistic religion and their main god was Mother Earth.

Religion

The Minoans followed a polytheistic religion. Their main gods were female and women played a huge role in religion. Priestesses were the most important people in their culture and women were the ones who performed rituals. Most of the evidence for Minoan religion were found in the form of shrines. Shrines found in buildings, small household shrines, cave shrines, etc. But there were also small cult buildings. Because their main god was Mother Earth, most of the shrines and offerings were for her. The Minoans also believed that many things were sacred such as lilies and snakes. They also believed that hills and caves had special meanings (hills led to the heavens and caves led to the underworld).

Gods

They had many gods. Three were the Snake Goddess, the protectress of the house and palace, the Mistress of Animals, a vegetation goddess, and the Mistress of Nature. But their main god was Mother Earth.
