A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infects a computer without permission and can be undetected by the owner of the computer. The virus “infects” a computer by corrupting or possibly deleting data. Viruses are most easily spread by attachments in e-mails or instant messages. They can be disguised as a seemingly harmless picture or internet greeting card. Downloading files off of sites on the internet can bring a stream of illicit viruses along with it. The Creeper virus was the first recognized computer virus; found on ARPANET, the forerunner of early internet in the 1970’s.
