Agriculture was difficult, but some crops grew extremely well, such as grapes and olives (thus producing wine and olive oil, which were treasured in the Near East). The coastal settlers relied heavily on fishing for their diet. In spite of the ruggedness of their life and the harshness of their social organization, these early Greeks traded with the Minoans. Their contact with the Minoans was instantly fruitful. Because of the lack of natural resources, the Mycenaeans were traded to get all of their necessary materials, which in turn also helped turn them into a very wealthy civilization.
