The neutron is a baryon composed of 2 up quarks and a down quark. It is electrically neutral. The quarks are held together using the strong force. Its force carrier particle is the gluon.

It was discovered in 1932 by the English physicist James Chadwick.

It undergoes beta decay. One of the up quarks becomes a down quark. Thus, the baryon becomes a proton. An electron and an electron anti neutrino are emitted.

Neutrons are used in current research as a probe in neutron scattering.
