Bible's Israel: P-1.1

What is the connection between the Tower of Babel and ancient Ziggurats?

Even though the actual shape of the Tower of Babel is disputed. The Tower and ancient Ziggurats share a purpose, which is to connect with the heavens, whether physically, or spiritually. Since the priests were allowed into the ziggurats in order to attend to the gods and preform their rituals, they ziggurats served solely a religious purpose. The role of the Tower of Babel served a purpose more directly for the people of Sumer, and was created by the people of Sumer.

But, the Tower of Babel must have served a different purpose in order for a god to prevent the people from using it. The tower's arrogance, symbolized by it steepness and height, incited a god to change the peoples' languages.

Architecture

The tower is generally shown as steeper and larger than a normal ziggurat, but it retains a similar design and shape. The connection between the Tower and ancient Ziggurats is the people that built them, because they built both ziggurats and the Tower.
