13 Physical Place

A Physical Place is a place that includes the natural features of Earth. Some examples of physical places include water, air, and land on the planet Earth. An example of a physical place in A Bone From A Dry Sea is, "In England you're doing well if you can see twenty miles, but here it could have been hundreds. The sky seems huge. Far out across the tawny grassland something was moving, invisible itself but raising a haze of brown-gold dust."(83) This is a good example of a physical place, because it describes a plain (land on the planet Earth).

14. Expertise

The definition of expertise is,expert skill or knowledge; expertness; know-how. An example of this in the novel "A Bone From a Dry Sea" is on page 70. It states, "Right. But look how the strata run. into the hill, see? There's a whole lot of hill to be cleared away to get at the one we want. Tons and tons and tons of Earth." In this quote May Anna is talking about how there is too much Earth to cover so they have to predict and rationalize in order to find out where they want to dig next. This shows that Mary Anna is an expertise on paleontology and fossils. Mary Anna is well experienced, and you can tell because when she is speaking in this quote she is talking about the history of Africa and where the bone is likely to be. This will also help the team because now they have narrowed down the search. However, On page 70 it also states, "but let's say it wasn't like that......The bones could be spread out right through the hill."In this quote it shows that Vinny is not an expertise on paleontology because you can tell that she isn't sure on what she is saying. She does bring up good points, but she is definitely not an expertise like Mary Anna is.
