Coordinates and Geographical Information

Latitude: 15.5 Longitude: 88.0 Located near the Caymen Islands, a popular tourist location right off the Gulf of Mexico, and the lower part of the North Pacific Ocean, San Pedro Sula culture has much to do with the Ocean. It is because of this close proximity to the ocean, that San Pedro Sula sits mainly on sedimentary rocks that have been compacted and cemented over many years.

History

Founded in June 27, 1536 by Pedro de Alvarado, San Pedro Sula has a rich history. Originally the San Pedro Sula area was a marsh and swampland. Gold found nearby was stamped into coins to create the nations currency. After the original location of San Pedro Sula was attacked by French, English, and Dutch pirates, the city was moved to where it is, a much more strategically safe place. Preferring the dry, highlands of other parts of Honduras, San Pedro Sula did not get many new settlers. However, over time, San Pedro Sula snowballed into a very well populated place, and was officially recognized by the Congress of Honduras as a city.\

Tectonic Information

San Pedro Sulla, Honduras is a very interesting location as far as plate tectonics are concerned. Located right in between the Cocos Plate and the North American Plate, it is smack dab on a convergent boundary, where the Cocos plate is hitting the North American plate. I may be exaggerating a tad in saying it is "smack dab on" a boundary, but it is located only about 100 miles from the convergent boundary, in truth, that is a very short distance. One of the reasons for this short distance is San Pedro Sula is a costal city, located right on the coast. This close proximity to the coast means that San Pedro Sulla, sits upon sedimentary rocks which are there because sediments have been washed ashore, compacted, and cemented against the shore over millions of years.
