English IV/IV-H Synthesis Paper

Departmental Guidelines

Due Date Monday April 30th at 7:45 a.m. Any request for an extension must be approved by your instructor, the Head of the English Department, and Mr. Wilson in advance. Late papers will be penalized according to the department's standard policy, which is a deduction of 10 points for each day or fraction thereof that the paper is late.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Length: 6-8 pages, excluding quotes; no maximum.
  2. Form: The paper must be typed and follow the English department's format. The paper must include a Works Cited page that lists the works from which you quote.
  3. You must use at least three works of literature studied in class this semester. Examples from the texts must be used to support your assertions.
  4. Your introduction must have a clear, specific, arguable thesis. You may not use an observation for a thesis. The development of your arguments in the body of the paper must be logical and cohesive. Your conclusion should be strong.
  5. The length of your paper, the size and number of paragraphs, and the number of quotes you include will depend on your thesis and the way you handle its exposition. Do not try to force your paper to an arbitrary number of paragraphs.
  6. The paper must be a synthesis of ideas, not a comparison or contrast paper. It must, unless it discusses the chronological evolution of a concept, be organized by topic rather than by work.

GRADING: The paper takes the place of your semester examination in English and therefore counts 25 % of your semester's grade.
