Harun al-Rashid
Harun al-Rashid (r. 786-809) (al-Rashid meaning "the one following the right path" or "upright" or "just.") was the fifth caliph of the Abbasid Dynasty. Harun was a great patron of art and learning, and is best known for the unsurpassed splendor of his court and lifestyle. In The Thousand and One Nights, his court and, of course, him are portrayed in an excellent way and forever immortalized. He was born to the caliph al-Madi and a slave girl, al-Khayzuran. Even before fully maturing Harun was made nominal leader of expeditions (of course, he did not do much fighting but his generals succeeded well, which afforded him the title "al-Rashid") [1]
