Sufis were Islam missionaries known as mystics. While highly educated in Islam theology and law, Sufis did not find formal religious teachings to be meaningful. Sufis spent more time trying to deepen their spiritual awareness than studying Islamic doctrine. Some lived as ascetics while others devoted their life to helping the poor. After the ninth century, Sufis became increasingly popular in Muslim societies because of their piety, devotion, and eagerness to help others. (T & E pg. 366)
