The hijira refers to Muhammad's original flight from Mecca in 622. Muhammad fled the city of his birth because of pressure applied by believers of pagan traditions who felt that Muhammad was threatening their religion. Muhammad's preaching angered the pagan majority of Mecca, and he had no choice but to flee to nearby Medina, safe from persecution. Muhammad's flight took eight days to complete. After several years of teaching Islam in Medina, Muhammad gathered his followers and prepared to take back Mecca. Today, the hijira marks the beginning of the new year in the Islamic lunar calendar.
