Jizya

The jizya was a special tax that was levied on people in Islamic States who were non-Muslims. The jizya was such a nuissance that it proved to work in its method of conversion, where people converted to Islam just so they did not have to deal with these nuisances. However, even those who converted during the Umayyad Dynasty did not enjoy wealth or authority like the Arab military aristocracy. This tax caused discontent among the non-Muslims and eventually contributed to the decline of the Umayyad (the unsatisfied Muslim-converts joined up with the Abbasid rebels).
