Ulama

The ulama are the educated class of Muslim scholars who were engaged in many aspects of Islamic study. Not only were they scholars, but they taught, at one time they had executive powers, judged, advised, and preached. They also served "a unique role by providing religious legitimacy for Saudi rule".[1]
