The shogun was important because he was a military governor, installed by the Minamoto clan, who ruled in the place of the emperor. The shogun was installed in the late 12th century when the Minamoto clan defeated the Taira clan. The samurai were important because they were the professional warriors of Japan. The samurai aided provincial lords in enforcing their control over their lands and claiming new lands. As payment for their services samurai were supported by their lords and did not have to worry about food, clothes, or housing.
