Mahmud of Ghazni was the leader of the Afghanistan Turks who were known for their invasions of north India during the 11th century CE. He lead 17 raids throughout northern India, his goal being more of greed than anything else. By taking advantage of the internal fighting occurring between local rulers, he annexed several states in northwestern India and the Punjab. His main goal of gaining wealth rather than power. He would sack temples, taking any items of value, then destroy the temple and build a mosque right on top of it. His invasions hastened the decline of Buddhism throughout northern India. They spread Islamic ideas, but altogether discouraged Indian conversion to Islam. His successors founded the Sultanate of Delhi.
