Sultanate of Delhi was the empire created during the 12th-13th century CE by the successors of Mahmud of Ghazni. It was nominally Islamic because of its Muslim conquerors. It consisted of many conquered Hindu kingdoms in northern India. The capital was in Delhi, which was the only place that the conquerors truly had control over. Local rulers retained most of the control while the sultans created neither a permanent bureaucracy or an administrative apparatus. These sultans depended on the good will of the Hindu kings to carry out any kind of politics. However, the sultans did sponsor Islam and help establish a secure place for their faith inside of India.
