This battle occurred in 1071 and was the final event that led to Seljuk Turks control over Anatolia. After migrating to Anatolia in large groups, the Seljuk forces fought with the Byzantines in Manzikert, which is located in eastern Anatolia. The Turks took the Byzantine emperor captive. As a result of this battle, the Byzantine empire became much smaller. In addition, this battle led to Anatolia becoming mostly Turkish and Islamic. The Battle of Manzikert is important because it transformed Anatolia and weakened the Byzantine empire.
