Born in 1167 to a noble family as Temujin (his birth name), Chinggis Khan was the son of a powerful clan leader. However, his father was poisoned, and Temujin left with no money and no safety. He grew up having to make his own "claim to fame". He planned, plotted, and positioned to become a leader. He learned the "policies of the plain", meaning he knew how and when to form or break alliances with others. After Temujin brought together a significant amount of people, he was named Chinggis Khan, or "universal ruler". When he was ruling, Temujin broke up tribes and made them "mix it up", in order to prevent powerful alliances from forming. He chose prominent leaders based on merit and loyalty. He established a capital at Karakorum, which symbolized unity and an empire. Temujin established Mongol rule in northern China and Persia. Temujin was important because he established Mongol supremacy in central Asia and united the Mongols.
