The Ilkhanate of Persia was established when Hülegü, Khubilai's brother, took over the Abbasid Empire. He captured Baghdad, the capital of the empire, in 1258. Hülegü's army was repelled by Egyptian forces, stopping his expansion to the southwest. The Ilkhanate's main downfall was the inability of the Mongols to adapt well to the role of governors of large, complex settled societies. Since they could not fulfill the governing roles of the societies they conquered, they lost control of most of the territories within a century.
