The Khwarazm Shah was a successor to the Seljuk Turks and controlled Afghanistan and Persia. In 1218 Chinggis Khan attempted open trade and diplomatic relations with the shah, but the shah ordered the murder of the Mongol envoys and merchants. Enraged, Chinggis mercilessly attacked the shah's empire, pillaging and destroying every city that crossed their path. They chased the shah down to an island in the Caspian sea where he died. Without anybody left to oppose Chinggis, the realm of the Khwarzm Shah was consolidated into the growing Mongol Empire.
