WHI-Chap18-Mehmed the Conqueror

Following the death of Tamerlane, The Ottomans were begining to reclaim their empire. By the 1440s they were ready to start expanding. The Ottoman attacks on the Byzantine Empire continued when Sultan Mehmed II or Mehmed the Conqueror began the Ottoman expansion into Macedonia again. In 1453 Mehmed captured and sacked Constantinople renaming the city Istanbul. By 1480 Mehmed had captured all of the remaining territories in the Byzantine empire. Following his rule the Ottomans continued to through out most of the 16th century. The Ottoman empire at its greatest extent included parts of Asia and Europe, Egypt, and North Africa.
