How did the Mongols rule Russia and Persia; what was the effect of their rule?

  • Russia and the Golden Horde

While the Golden Horde never occupied Russia, which they regarded as an unattractive land of forests,it did extract tribute from them. This practice continued until the prince of Moscow refused to pay (in the reign of Ivan III)and the Mongols left Russia; except for the area know as the Crimea. Mongol khans continued to rule the area until the late 18th century.

  • Hulegu and the Ilkhanate of Persia
    • Hulegu (Kubilai Khan's brother) overthrew the Seljuk/Abbasid empire and established the Ilkhanate of Persia. After sacking Baghdad, Hulegu and his army expand into Syria, but Muslim forces from Egypt stop Mongol expanse to the southwest.
    • Mongols occupied the highest government positions, but Persians were allowed to serve as ministers, provinicial governors and low level state officials.
    • While early Mongol Ilkhans practiced shamanism, the tolerated all other religions. Over time they gravitated and finally convert to Islam.
