The Golden Horde expanded Mongol control into Russia between 1237 and 1241, as well as venturing into Poland, Hungary, and Eastern Germany in 1241 and 1242. They maintained a large army on the steppes north of the Black Sea and used it to raid Russia. They did not occupy Russia since the forests of Russia were ill suited to their preferred lifestyle. The Golden Horde extracted tribute from the cities and agricultural provinces of Russia, and remained in control until the mid-fifteenth century when the princes of Moscow contested their authority and built a strong Russian state.
