As the religious leaders of nomadic Turk and nomadic Mongol civilization, shamans had many responsibilities and abilities. Turkish religion revolved around nature and the spirits, and shamans were believed to possess supernatural powers. Shamans were able to communicate with the gods and bestow divine aid upon Turkish citizens. They were able to act as an intermediary between the gods and humans. Shamans were important because earliest Turkish religion revolved around them.
