Pope Urban II- Pope Urban II is most famous for his role in the launching of the Crusades, a movement meant to recapture Palestine. He launched the Crusades in 1095 while meeting with bishops at the Council of Clermont in response to the Byzantines' call for help with the Saljuq Turks. He asked for Christians to fight and reconquer Palestine. He promised salvation for any man who fell in battle during the campaign. There was an immediate response to his call for assistance.
