Vinland was discovered by Leaf Ericsson, a Scandinavian explorer, in the 1000s. This area is really Newfoundland Canada, and was called Vinland because of the grapes there. A colony was established and people lived in Vinland for a while, although the colonies did not survive. This illustrates the Europeans ability to explore the larger world and interest in exploring the larger world during the High Middle Ages.
