Reconquista- After the Muslim invasion and conquest, the caliphate of Cordoba controlled almost all of the Iberian peninsula. The reconquista process began in the 1060's from the few remaining Christian areas in northern Spain, Catalonia and Leon. In 1085, Christian forces had pushed Muslim forces as far back as Toledo, and by 1150, they had captured Lisbon and established their authority over half of the peninsula. As a result of their success, reinforcements were sent from France and England. Only Granada remained Muslim until 1492 when it was conquered by Christian forces. After territories were reconquered, church officials immediately restored Christian authority and groups such as the Dominican friars where especially active in the conversion of locals. Gradually, Islam was replaced in Spain by Christianity. Like the Crusades, the reconquista was a movement with the intent of displacing Islam with Christianity in Europe. See also: WHI- Chap20-Obj5
